Meet the People Tour

The Meet the People Tour, which originates in Mossel Bay, is a must. Ordinary folk are the stars of this tour that takes you from Mossel Bay's township area through the Outeniqua Foothills on rural roads not normally travelled by tourists.

You might meet Alfred who makes bricks, Millie who makes jam out of wild watermelons and rose petals, or Janneman, a paraplegic who makes leather handbags, or Tanie Pop who runs a local spaza shop, or the Munro family who have farmed wild oysters in the area since the 1800s.

You will experience all aspects of local life as well as enjoy the stunning scenery, which make this area one of the most beautiful tours on the garden route.

As each local person who partners Back Road Safaris on the meet the people tour are conducting their daily lives, the same individuals are not available for every tour.

Therefore when you are met by your guide for the day you will be given an overview of the tour arranged for you and the people you will meet.

The tour commences from the meeting point, moving to the KwaNonquaba-township, on the outskirts of Mossel Bay town, the guide will acquaint you with the local history of the area and its people. You will interact with some of the people who live and
work in the area.

From here we move into the spectacular Outeniqua Mountains to experience life in the rural area, the scenery on this part of the journey is stunning, and provides the opportunity to travel off the beaten track.

Our journey takes us to the rural community of Friemersheim and Great Brak providing an opportunity to experience life there, before returning to Mossel Bay.

If it is required, lunch in Friemersheim can be provided as part of the tour and will cost R30 extra.

Oudtshoorn Tour

Head for the hills via the Robinson Pass, which follows an old elephant trail through the Outeniqua Mountains and into the hauntingly beautiful, semi-arid Little Karoo.

Visit the Cango Caves, described as the eighth wonder of Africa, the fascinating Cango Ostrich Show Farm and the Cango Wildlife Ranch. Relax, enjoy the drive and let your guide take the strain!

You will be collected from the arranged meeting point, and taken through the delight full Robinson pass, you travel through Outdtshorn and onto the Cango Caves your first stop of the day, there will be time to enjoy a coffee and light breakfast if required in the restaurant at the caves.

The intention to enable you to take the first tour of the day which starts at 10am and lasts approximately one hour, if you wish to look at the Cango caves information area and spend time in the gift shop there is time.

From the caves the tour calls in at an Ostrich show farm where an over view of the history of the industry is given as well as the modern industry, there is chance to ride an Ostrich ( only if you weigh 70 kilos or less) and be introduced to the birds close up.
Then into the Cango wild life ranch a ranch which is dedicated to the breeding in conjunction of other wild life ranches in the world to increase the diversity of the gene pool of certain large cats. An interesting and informative experience where there is also the opportunity to cage dive with crocodiles.

It is here that lunch is taken and there is time to relax and enjoy a break before you travel back to Mossel Bay.
