- Be A Bartolomeu Dias - Discover Mossel Bay Day Tour -

Firstly discovered by Bartolomeu Dias more than 500 years ago, the town has a fascinating history, much of which is on display at the Bartolomeu Dias Museum Complex.

Visit the world-wide known Post Office Tree, under which, in 1501, a letter was left by a ship’s sommander, to be discovered by the commander of the third East India fleet en route to India. Thus, South Africa’s first post office came into being. It has been declared a National Monument. Dominating the interior of the Maritime Museum, is the spectacular life-size replica of Dias’s caravel, the ship he sailed in when first anchoring in Mossel Bay.

Other attractions well worth visiting are the local Culture Museum, The Granary, the Shell Museum and Aquarium, Munrohoek (the oldest residence built in 1830) and the stone ‘Padrao’ or Cross erected by Vasco Da Gama and a wooden cross, representing the first place of worship on South African soil, built by Joao da Nova in 1501.

At The Point, visitors have breath-taking views of waves crashing against rocky shoreline. Experience swimming in a natural rock pool, take a walk along the scenic St Blaize Hiking Trail or watch dolphins, seals and whales at play from the various look-out points. Discover the Khoi-San Cave, a shelter of indigenous folk where artifacts were found dating back 80000 years, or visit the St Blaize Lighthouse, the only 24-hour manned lighthouse on the Southern Cape Coast.

Take a boat trip around Seal Island - see ±2500 seals mate, breed and nurture their offspring.

Or visit the Hartenbos Museum, where impressive life-like dioramas recall the way of life during the period of the "Great Trek" of 1838. A must for steam train enthusiasts is the Voorbaai Locomotive Yard - the biggest centre for restoring and maintaining steam locomotives on the South African rail network.
